Your bathroom exhaust fan picks up all kinds of grease, grime, and dust. This will reduce air flow, make it noisier, and maybe make it smell bad. Clean it out from time to time with this simple tip.

The Technique

  1. Turn off the breaker and/or unplug the unit.
  2. Remove the cover panel, which is usually held on with spring clips.
  3. Unplug the fan unit — look for a short cord plugged into the other part of the fan assembly.
  4. Carefully remove the screw holding the fan unit. Usually just one screw. Watch out that the fan doesn’t drop on your head when you remove the screw.
  5. Vacuum the ceiling unit and the fan unit.
  6. Reassemble.
